Our May issue "The Radical Pacific" focuses on issues affecting the Asian and Pacific Islander American community. in the American mind can probably best be summed up by two contradictory images: one of the Buddha meditating peacefully, the other of Nobel Peace Prize winner His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a monk from a far-off land thrust into an unexpected role as political leader and world figure. The first implies detachment, quiet, and humble serenity, while the second conjures images of engagement with the world, moral righteousness, and energetic activity on the behalf of others. So which is more characteristic of Buddhism, the ascetic saint alone in his cave, or the passionate social activist?.
